“Should have seen the mess those chowderheads made,” he said. “You don’t happen to know who the driver was?”

“Eh? Huh?” I hadn’t really been paying attention to him yet and his question caught me off guard. It was early on a steely-gray overcast Monday morning and my coffee hadn’t been nearly strong enough.

“The last driver who came out here—he filled in the holes over there,” he said pointing to where some holes that used to lead down to the church basement were now filled with concrete. “Wasn’t with one of my crew—it was a member of the church.”

I shook my head. “No, sorry. No idea. The last time I came out here we were pouring the foundation to the new garage.”

The contractor shrugged. “No matter. Wasn’t his fault anyway. A church deacon was in charge. Told the driver to dump out the excess on the parking lot. Said he didn’t want the driver to take it back to the yard so your company could resell it. Didn’t want them to make any profit on his overage.” He chuckled. “Going to cost him a pretty penny. Cost me $500 to break it up and haul it away for him. Figure I’ll double that and bill him.”

Knowing what time of day this church usually poured concrete with us, chances were the leftovers would have been dumped on the ground back at our yard—but even if had been resold, two yards of scrap concrete would have earned my company around $100. So this spiteful church deacon (Yes, deacon!) got paid back his spiteful, selfish act tenfold.

Genesis 38:8-10 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

I’m not quite sure what was going through this deacon’s mind—other than a worldly act of spite—but had I been overseeing that pour, I wouldn’t have thought twice about sending the scrap back to the company as a seed. Let them be blessed by my mistake in over-ordering.

I’m sure to that deacon, this made perfect business sense (I fail to see how—I’m just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.) but the Kingdom of God isn’t a business, no matter how much the government tries to make us believe it is.

And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
